Indicator name |
Proportion of population using (a) safely managed sanitation services and (b) a hand-washing facility with soap and water |
Data name |
Proportion of population using (a) safely managed sanitation services and practicing (b) open defecation |
Definition |
The proportion of the population using a basic sanitation facility which is not shared with other households and where excreta is safely disposed in situ or treated off-site. ‘Improved’ sanitation facilities include: flush or pour flush toilets to sewer systems, septic tanks or pit latrines, ventilated improved pit latrines, pit latrines with a slab, and composting toilets. |
Data collection |
Original microdata are used where possible. Where microdata are not readily accessible, country-specific data are collected, segreated by urban and rural areas, from other literature and materials available and population weight is applied to calculate the indicator. Where data for certain years are null, the indicator is estimated using a set of “JMP estimation” rules for interpolation, extrapolation, and extension. |
